Step 1: Download and install Akeeba Backup
- Visit the Akeeba Backup official website (Akeeba Backup) and download the latest version of the Akeeba Backup component.
- Login to the administration panel of your Joomla 4 website.
- Navigate to "System" > "Install" > "Extensions".
- Drag and drop or browse to the downloaded Akeeba Backup file to install the Package File.
- After the installation return to the administration panel.
Step 2: Perform Akeeba Backup (Before Restoring)
- In the Joomla admin panel, click on "Components" > "Akeeba Backup".
- Click the Configuration Button. You can use default options or set custom settings.
- Click "Back Up Now" from the Akeeba Backup main menu to backup your website. The backup is saved in the standard .jpa format unless otherwise specified in the settings. I personally prefer .zip files.
Step 3: Restore the website backup
- Make sure you have the backup created by Akeeba Backup (.zip file) and access to the Joomla directory and Joomla database.
- Copy the .zip file into the main folder of your Joomla installation and unzip it. Overwrite all existing files or delete all files first.
- Now go to your website (https://www.your-site.com/installation/) to prevent external access upload an empty index.html to your main directory.
- Now you should see the "Pre-installations check". Information about server settings, backup and site settings.
- Click on the "Next" button (top right).
- Now comes the window of restoring the main database of the website. Fill out all connection information to the database. (Database server host name, User name, Password, Database name) The advanced settings can be ignored if you are not sure what you are doing.
- Click on the "Next" button (top right) to start the recovery process.
Step 4: Wait for the recovery process
- Akeeba Backup will perform the restore procedure automatically. The progress is shown on the screen.
- Depending on the size of the database and the options selected, the recovery process may take some time. Please wait for the process to complete.
- Click on the "Next Step" button to start the website setup.
Step 5: Website location parameters
Step 6: Checking the restored website
- After the recovery process is complete, check your Joomla 4 website to make sure it's working as expected.
- Visit different pages, test forms, check menus, etc. to make sure all functionality has been properly restored.
Note: It is important to know that Akeeba Backup is a powerful tool that can protect you from data loss. However, it is not a guarantee of a smooth recovery if problems arise outside of the component's control. Therefore, you should make regular backups and make sure they are working properly so that you have a working backup copy in case of a website problem.
